TYPES OF LEADERSHIP

A. Democratic Leadership

Basically found in Africa among elders. However the concept has been deviated by many African politicians today. Democracy demands a good listening if it has to acquire true meaning in facilitation.

B. Emergent leadership

Naturally a leader emerges out of the community. He is not appointed but automatically comes out. He is a leader on spot. This is more among the youth (GenZ). It could be recommendable for the start of a small christian community.

C. Charismatic leadership

Somebody with special ability, and with a gift of foresight. For example St. Paul. However he may have no patience or no time to discuss, but is obeyed by all. Always questions established structures. Hence he is open to all sorts of troubles. One problem when he dies he cannot be replaced. (Cf. Jesus, St. Paul).

D. Prophetic leadership

Similar to charismatic, in that also challenges existing values, changes attitudes, reforms and renews existing values. He is always open, and ready for any danger. They are always paid by their mouths. This needs a lot of courage.

E. Mediator leadership

A go between person in moments, you maintain the cooperation and dialogue. In this type, human realization is very important. Leader of values for African is relationship, for Europeans/Americans is efficiency, so it is not easy to be applied in this type of leadership. Mediator leadership is good for the small christian community (SCC).

F. Planned leadership

Needs some courage. It is planned through education, and other sorts of training. It is through conventional means. The church leadership need to keep pace with the rapid changes be social, economic, political or tribal, cultural etc. We have to first identify the situation, then isolate it so as to be able to adapt accordingly. There is no better time for preaching the message of the church than in the very human situation we are in.

Church leadership should be able to see ahead. We need to realize that effective leadership must be diversified in its knowledge and application. Should cultivate all the time appropriate methodology proper to each situation. Whatever social situation has got a lot of influence and impact on the church. So in turn the church, should make an influence and impact on such situations. Leadership should lead people to see the challenges of the change and what to do about it. Leadership has to see in itself as missionary and not for itself. That is to say the common should never be the servant of ones leadership. We must know the world around, we must know what missionary means in its own sense.
